Horizon (Port, Starboard) is a two-channel video projection depicting the moving horizon line filmed simultaneously from opposite sides of an ice-strengthened ship. As the ship propels forward and rolls from port to starboard the horizon rises and falls within the two window frames – one horizon falling exactly as the other rises.
The artist filmed the work on board the RRS Ernest Shackleton as it journeyed from The Falkland Islands to Antarctica via the infamously rough seas of the Drake Passage. This stretch of water is the convergence point for the Pacific, Atlantic and Southern Oceans and is considered one of the most treacherous in the world. High winds, violent storms and waves of around 12 metres are common and currents at its latitude meet no resistance from any landmass.
During her 90-day artist residency with the British Antarctic Survey, the artist made several other films including Wanderers, Crevasse and Soup as well as her interactive online drawing Polar Wandering.
