Wanderers was filmed on Bird Island, a small subantarctic island and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) at the northwest tip of South Georgia in the Southern Ocean. Approximately 1000km southeast of the Falkland Islands and accessible only ship, the island is one of the world’s richest wildlife sites, and has large, diverse populations of seabirds and fur seals.
The artist travelled to the island on the RRS Ernest Shackleton during her journey to Antarctica with the British Antarctic Survey where she spent four days exploring as part of her interactive online work Polar Wandering. As part of her research, she accompanied a zoologist on their daily hike over steep tussock-grass-covered hills to one of the island's remote field huts to monitor an albatross colony. Wanderers was filmed out of the window of the hut and depicts hundreds of albatrosses making short appearances one at a time out of the damp misty sky.
