The artist filmed Soup on board the ice-strengthened scientific research ship RRS Ernest Shackleton
as it journeyed from The Falkland Islands to Antarctica via the infamously rough seas of the Drake Passage. This stretch of water is the convergence point for the Pacific, Atlantic and Southern Oceans and is considered one of the most treacherous in the world. High winds, violent storms and waves of around 12 metres are common and currents at its latitude meet no resistance from any landmass.
Soup depicts a bowl of tomato soup served to the artist and the ship's crew during a storm. While the bowl itself is kept in position by the friction of a rubberized table mat, the sloshing orange liquid inside is less easily restricted, mirroring the movement of the rough seas outside.
Soup was filmed during the artist's journey to Antarctica with the British Antarctic Survey. During her 90-day artist residency, she made several films including Wanderers, Crevasse and Horizon (Port, Starboard) as well as her interactive online drawing Polar Wandering.
