NewcastleGateshead, 2005

NewcastleGateshead is a diptych comprising a collaged map and a corresponding collaged index. The map, which takes the form of North East England, is compiled from regional namesakes cut from city maps worldwide. It includes towns, cities, rivers and other place names predominantly from the USA, Australia, Canada, Jamaica and Ireland. The collaged index accompanying the map lists all the namesakes included in the map and is constructed from tiny fragments of international city maps.

Thirty thousand copies of the double-sided, folded print version of NewcastleGateshead were distributed free across the UK to coincide with the NewcastleGateshead Festival of the Visual Arts 2006.

Additionally, the collage was reproduced as a limited edition digital pigment print using archival inks on Somerset Enhanced Velvet paper (255gsm), Signed edition of 35.

Commissioned by Locus+
