Solo show
18 May - 13 July 2013
A solo exhibition featuring a new online and photographic work Antipodes (2013) and her immersive video and sound installation Tong Tana (2012).
Antipodes pairs webcam images from places on opposite sides of the globe. As far away from each other as it is possible to be, these distant ‘twins’ have obvious day/night, and summer/winter contrasts but also surprising affinities. Antipodes was launched on the spring equinox 2013 and will continue to capture live webcam images for one year. In spring 2014, the project will become a huge online database. www.antipodes.uk.com
From 2008-2010 Curtis spent time living and travelling with the Penan, an indigenous people of the Borneo rainforest. Tong Tana captures a view of the Borneo rainforest from the perspective of a semi-nomadic Penan hunter as he traverses rugged jungle terrain – making solitary journeys through traditional hunting grounds with his handmade poison-arrow blowpipe. The work was filmed using a head-mounted camera and binaural microphones worn by the hunter. His journey is experienced as an immersive video installation, with binaural sound.
Tong Tana also includes a series of maps made in collaboration with the hunter that plot his route over several days.
The artist would like to thank The Penan of the Upper Baram River, Sarawak, Borneo for their generosity and hospitality. Tong Tana is supported by Arts Council England. Sound mastered by Craig Vear.
Antipodes is commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella, in association with Spacex. Supported by Arts Council England.
